SUNYA-Towards Zero Waste in South Asia Project

Sun, 05 Aug, 2012
MuAN recently signed a contract with the European Commission for the project SUNYA-Towards Zero Waste in South Asia. The partnership is formed by a multi-country and multi-function consortium including seven pilot cities Tansen and Hetauda in Nepal, Shimla in North India and Coimbatore in South India, Phuentsholing in Bhutan, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Matale in Sri Lanka along with ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability South Asia Secretariat and the non-state actor association for waste prevention, ARGE Müllvermeidung, based in Austria.  The consortium pilot cities are of very different size, economic, cultural and geographical conditions; despite the differences, the zero-waste approach should be followed independently by the size and specific situation of the city. The consortium aims to reach the adoption of an approach, which can be replicated under very different conditions and that can be afterwards adapted to the different conditions. Moreover, it has been decided to include in the project four realities in Least Developed Countries with a two-fold motivation. First of all the need to improve the quality of life and alleviate the poverty is definitively higher in LDC countries. Secondly, the relative scarce presence of existing projects and already adopted solution, as well as the lower level of consumption (especially in Bhutan and Nepal) can allow starting the initiatives “from scratch”. In short: the aim of the project is to test the zero-waste approach both where solutions are already adopted and where waste management represents a completely new concept. The project will last three years (36 months) and will be composed by six operative work-packages (WP). In addition to them, the WP “Management” and WP “Dissemination” will run the whole project. The Kick-Off Meeting of the project has been scheduled to be held from January 30-February 2, 2012 in Kathmandu, Nepal amid all partners.  Read More →
